Hoist the Colors to Release Mourners 9/24 via Hardline Entertainment

The Band to Celebrate with dates supporting Dropkick Murphys, and Festival Show with Mahones, Flatfoot 56, and more

August 24, 2016 -- Los Angeles -- Hoist the Colors today announced the release of Mourners, their third full length and second album for label Hardline Entertainment. The album will be available on CD and digital download on September 24, with a limited edition vinyl release soon to follow.

Hoist the Colors first gained notoriety with their 2012 label debut Miles To Go Before We Sleep, a record that earned recognition from both punk and alt-country taste-makers, and the admiration of underground music fans across the U.S. The band was named an artist to watch by Alternative Press magazine later that year.

Their latest effort finds the band expanding on their trademark mix of folk traditions and punk energy, exploring new sounds and focusing on songcraft.

“This time out, we focused 100% on songwriting,” remarks primary songwriter and lead singer Josh Linden. “While we’re extremely happy with the sounds we captured, at the end of the day, the songs are the most important thing. We really took our time to write meaningful songs that tell stories and take the listener on a journey. Mourners is the most honest music the band has ever written.”

Alongside this honesty is a grit that reflects the band’s struggles from three years on the road, as well as their evolution as people and musicians

“The album is definitely darker,” adds guitarist Jeff Murphy. “But ultimately the darker mood gives way to themes of hope and redemption.” Culled from more than 25 songs, the final 12 on Mourners are an acknowledgement of mortality and a statement about the pain and loss of an irretrievable past.

But for all it’s grieving, ultimately the album is a plea to live in the present, and to never give up on the things that give us joy - love, adventure, family, and of course, music.

The songs are brought to life by soulful melodies, driving punk rhythms, and a heavy dose of twang. Country influences - mandolin, acoustic guitar, lapsteel, and spanky telecaster lines - abound.

To celebrate the album launch, the band is playing a string of dates on the west coast supporting the Dropkick Murphys on their 20th anniversary tour (including a home town show at the Hollywood Palladium), as well as Get Shamrocked, Southern California’s biggest Irish music festival, alongside the Mahones, The Tossers, and Flatfoot 56.

Mourners will be available for purchase in Fall 2016 on iTunes and at www.HardlineEnt.com, and streaming on Spotify and Rhapsody.

Lyrics

1. Little Rebel

I was a little rebel with my heart sewn on my sleeve
I was keeping up the faith
Faith just wouldn't keep with me
So I torched those mighty bridges and got myself lost at sea
Drifting off to nowhere with no reason to believe

Hey little rebel do you know what you've become
If you saw the man you are today
You'd still be on the run
So much for raising stakes
Chasing what you've never seen
Never thought you'd see the day when you could not believe

So we go on
Yes we roll on
Drifting further down the river
While I'm searching for peaceful waters
With nothing left to lose

Hey little rebel have you your will to fight
Is your grave already dug
Will you make it through the night
This weight upon your shoulders is a weight you'll always bare
Find your place in this world
I'm sure I'll see you there

(Chorus)

So long so long
I'm leaving here today
So long so long
I'm leaving here today

(Chorus)

2. No One Lives Here Anymore

Throw up your hands and reach up for the sky
And sing of better days
You're worried now son and that's alright
For you will have a say
The damage was done at a young tender age
When first you heard the sound
You circled around them in fits of rage while the world tried to tear you down

So while you fight your anger and sing the blues
No sunny days here left for you
Until you let your life go and walk through the door
No one lives here anymore

You searched for the answers in songs sung by those
You thought would ease your pain
But they offered no solace for when you grow old
And left you standing in the rain

(Chorus)

Well give me tired and give me your poor
Huddled masses yearning for more
The wretched refuse of your teaming shores
No one lives here anymore
The songs have all died and the voices are lost
And here in this room
The dancing has stopped
No one lives here anymore
No one lives

(Chorus)

3. Mourners

Pardon my appearance I've been fighting in the wars
My arms won't stop from shaking and my feet won't touch the floor
The graves of my companions I've dug them all a hundred times or more
There was something calling me
A vision or a dream
The places I would travel to
The people I would see
And every time I closed my eyes
It all seemed real to me

Without a place to go
You will find me here
I wanted you to know
I'll keep burning through the years

It seems the gods will turn their backs on those who don't believe
The crowns of their empires go to kings whom act as thieves
And we the lonely desperate
We struggle to rise off our knees
When our good intentions seem to float up in the air
Our eyes will raise up to the sky and say a mournful prayer
As we the dreamers dream away
A world that does not care

(Chorus)

Take me where those fires reach the sky
And take me where they sing a mourners lullaby

4. Muse

I fought for you
My sweet lover
I fought for you
You let me down
I've been wasting
All my breathing
Hoping one day
You'll come around

Have I mistreated you in past lives
Have I broken your heart in two
Oh I'm sorry
I was just trying
To find some comfort
Next to you

Well I gave you my heart and soul now
And I'm empty as a tomb
I swear I love you
Please don't leave me
My whole world it ends with you

(Chorus)

I lay my head down by your pages
I lay my head down oh so low
No more fighting
I'm yours completely
When I lay dying I'll call your name

(Chorus)

5. Dancing With Ghosts

Drunken silhouettes
Last cigarettes
Do your best now to cope
We're closing down the well
Spin like a carousel
No direction to go
I know I'm dancing with a ghost
I know, lord I know

Weary river
Sweet water
Hold me in your arms
Drown my sorrows
Heal this hollow heart

Broken smiles fade
One last serenade
From the angels and I'm gone
Whiskey lullabies
Something to close your eyes
And help you carry on
I know I'm dancing with a ghost
I know, lord I know

(Chorus)

Oh and all
All I am
Is a photo waiting for a steady hand

(Chorus)

6. Rainier

Drive all night
just to see your face
through hills of snow and fields of flame
and the rain falls now
on the window pane
and up on Mt. Rainier

So we drink all night
til the sun it shines
then kiss beneath the dripping pines
those city lights
shine bright like your eyes
I wish I could stay tonight

Patience
may be a virtue someplace else
but our time is running out
and life won’t wait, won’t wait

So I call you up from a roadside phone
my heart is broke and I’m halfway home,
and I can’t stand another day
without you near
without you near

So you sold your clothes
all the things you own
packed a bag and left a note
and from a window seat,
with no ticket home,
said goodbye to Mt. Rainier

7. So It Goes

Bones shake when cold
My days grow colder now
No signs of sun breaking these clouds
My baby's gone
She left with my broken heart
She wanted more so I lost it all

And so it goes
You're all alone

Hammer away
Talk to myself again
The tools of the trade
Paper and pen
So let me explain
The worries that fill my head
Sit for a while and let me begin

(Chorus)

My baby's gone
My baby's gone
My baby's gone away

Bones shake when cold
My days grow colder now
No signs of sun breaking these clouds

8. All Quiet on the Western Front

Here in the trenches where no one goes
Down here time can move oh so slow
Work out fingers to the bone
To catch a glimpse of light
Maybe a better life
We take these back roads
Through these hills
Down to the hollers where we rest our will
Face the night as black as coal
Down by the riverside
I think I see a sign

Nothing's easy
Nobody said it would be
Still we go on down below

Find a piece of something real
Grab as much as we can steal
Face the night although we know
We're fighting this alone
No we can't go home
We've been facing hell on earth
Bones lay broken 'neath the dirt
Still here for what it's worth
No signs of slowing down
Just kings without a crown

(Chorus)

We take the roads that keep us hanging on
We take the roads where no one's walked upon

(Chorus)

9. Bullseye

I've been scrounging 'round for years looking for a sign
Anything to keep me moving cross those old state lines
I kept the truth inside my head
Seems that I've got nothing left
Watch my back and I'll watch yours and try not to let you down

Keep me guessing
So the blood keeps pumping

Let's go tonight
Let's go one more time
You know we're alright
Let's go tonight

My head is spinning like the wheels that pound these open roads
And I can't shake these memories I guess that's how it goes
Slowing down welcomes death
Or something far more worse than it
Piece together anything to salvage this old soul

Keep me guessing
So the blood keeps pumping

(Chorus)

10. Stowaway

My my
If they could only see us now
We'd be kings
We'd be kings under the ground
But hold on boy
Don't you know this world is cold
It'll shake you to the earth or so I'm told
But as those weeping willows sing their lonesome songs
I'll be on the rivers edge
Slowly wandering on

I can hear those lonely voices wandering through the pines
Taking me away to another place and time
Holding my attention until they disappear
Something grabbed me by the hand and showed me where to go

No one will ever find you
No one will ever know

And you will be a memory
A whisper soft and low
But as those weeping willows sing their lonesome songs
I'll be on the rivers edge
Slowly wandering on

No one will ever find you
No one will ever know

My my
If they could only see us now
We'd be kings
We'd be kings under the ground
But hold on boy
Don't you know this world is cold
It'll shake you to the earth or so I'm told
But as those weeping willows sing their lonesome songs
I'll be on the rivers edge
Slowly wandering on

(Chorus)

11. Mariposa

You know this world has got me crazy
I need to get away
So I walk on up that hillside
To the house where I feel safe

I know I can't change
The troubles that I made
I'll see you all at home
We can sip on something strong
And lighten up the load
This I know

This is where I last saw my grandpa
Have a catch in the backyard
This is where I still see my grandma
When I need a heart to heart

(Chorus)

Don't you worry momma we'll get em next year
I can feel it deep inside my bones
Let me in that room where I first heard the music play
Silly girl, seein red and sailin on and kerosene

You know this world has got me crazy
I need to get away
I need to get away

12. Something More Than This

I was a mountain
A wild river
I was something more than this
I was danger I was warning
I was something more than this
I was something more than this

I shouted from above
I found my everlasting love
She puts my mind at ease
When I wake up in the night
And she's no longer by my side
The fear well it brings me to my knees
And so a shallow prayer said in the dark now
Someone please take me away
So I can say

That I'm gone
Like a feather in the wind
And I'm gone
You won't be seeing me again
Lord I'm gone
Pardon me of all my sins
I'm out the door I'm gone

I look back to the past and the only thing I find
Regret and misery
I left too much behind
And with my memory so blind
This road is all I see
And so

A shallow prayer said in the dark now
Someone please take me away
So I can say

(Chorus)

Well the past is a ghost and the future is cold
All that is left is your own precious soul
Bleed out the words that you write on the page
And give it all away

And if I must do this on my own
I'll do this till my blood runs cold
Shake the dust off of these bones
One step towards the great unknown

(Chorus)
